The billions in matching gifts your company throws away every year

Matching is the most powerful lever in workplace giving. It is also the most wasted. Every year, somewhere between $4bn and $7bn in matching-gift funds go completely unclaimed (Double the Donation). That is budget that was approved, set aside and never used.

Matching is the most powerful lever in workplace giving. It is also the most wasted. Every year, somewhere between $4bn and $7bn in matching-gift funds go completely unclaimed (Double the Donation). That is budget that was approved, set aside and never used.

If you run a giving programme with a matching budget, some of that waste is almost certainly yours. The good news is that recovering it costs nothing. It is not a budget problem. It is a visibility problem.

Why matching is worth protecting

Matching does something no other giving mechanic does: it multiplies the money and the motivation at the same time.

84% of donors say they are more likely to give when a match is on offer.

Adding a match to an appeal lifts the response rate by 71% and the average gift by 51%.

One in three donors give more when they know it will be matched.

(All figures Double the Donation.) A pound of match does not just add a pound of charity income. It pulls in additional employee donations that would not otherwise have happened, and it deepens the engagement of the person giving. It is the closest thing to free leverage in the whole programme.

So why does so much go unclaimed?

Not stinginess. Invisibility. The single biggest reason matching budgets expire unused is that 78% of employees do not know their employer offers a match at all (Double the Donation). You cannot claim what you do not know exists.

The result is stark. Only around 11% of corporate cash contributions, roughly $2.86bn a year, actually flow through matching programmes, a fraction of what companies have made available. The rest evaporates on 31 December, every year.

Design decides participation

How you structure the match matters too. The evidence shows participation climbs with the cap:

A $1,000 match cap tends to produce around 12% participation.

A $1,000 to $10,000 range, around 18%.

Caps above $10,000, up to 40%.

A generous cap that nobody knows about still achieves nothing. But a well-set cap, made visible at the right moment, is one of the most reliable ways to lift both giving volume and engagement.

How to stop wasting your match

Three moves recover most of the lost value, and none needs extra budget:

Make the match visible at the moment of giving. Do not bury it in a policy document. Show the employee, as they donate, that their £10 becomes £20. That single change closes most of the awareness gap.

Remove the manual steps. If claiming a match means a separate form, a manager sign-off and a wait, most people will not bother. Automated matching, with the rules and approvals built in, means the match just happens.

Nudge in context. Prompt people where they already are, in the tools they use, at moments that matter, so the match reaches the 78% who currently never see it.

The prize

Recovering unclaimed matching is the rare corporate giving win that is both high-impact and low-cost. You already have the budget. You have already approved the policy. The only thing standing between you and doubled donations, plus a measurable jump in engagement, is visibility and friction. Fix those, and the money you were quietly throwing away goes to work instead.

---

Want the full picture? Our research report, The State of Corporate Giving 2026, shows where the biggest quick wins in corporate giving hide, from matching to participation to impact reporting, and what the best-run programmes do differently. Download it here.
