# You built a giving programme. So why won't anyone use it?

20 May 2026 · 3 min read

You did everything right. You secured the budget, chose the causes, launched with a company-wide email and put a page on the intranet. A few enthusiasts jumped in. And then, quietly, the numbers flattened.

If that sounds familiar, you are not failing. You are running into the single biggest pattern in corporate giving, and it is not the one most people expect.

## The problem is not generosity. It is participation.

We looked across the most credible 2026 data on corporate giving, and one thread runs through all of it. The money and the intent are there. What is missing is participation.

The clearest proof is volunteering. After years of steady effort, corporate volunteering participation reached only 13.6% in 2025, up from 10.4% in 2019 (Benevity). That is real progress, and it still means roughly 86 in every 100 employees take no part. CECP puts the average at around 25% (Giving in Numbers 2025). Either way, most of your workforce is watching from the sidelines.

Payroll Giving in the UK shows the same thing going backwards: down to a seven-year low of £125m, with participating employees falling from 591,000 to 516,000 in two years (HMRC), against a pool of around 30 million PAYE employees who could take part.

The uncomfortable truth: a giving programme almost never fails because people are not generous. It fails because it was not designed for them to join.

![Employee at a desk, disengaged from the screen in front of them](https://www.givingforce.com/hs-fs/hubfs/givingforce-brand/stock/573947261.jpg?width=1600&height=800&name=573947261.jpg)

Low participation is rarely apathy. It is usually a programme people cannot find and cannot finish.

## The three real reasons people don't take part

None of these is apathy. All of them are fixable.

**1. They don't know it exists.** Awareness is the silent killer. A remarkable 78% of donors do not even know whether their employer offers a matching gift (Double the Donation). If people do not know what is on offer, they cannot say yes.

**2. There is too much friction.** Every extra form, login and approval sheds participants. Nearly a third of nonprofits say they cannot reach their giving potential simply because the tools and systems are not there (Double the Donation). The same is true inside companies. If giving takes effort, most people will not finish.

**3. It doesn't fit their life.** A single annual volunteering day excludes everyone who is busy that day. People take part when there is something that fits. Micro-volunteering, small flexible actions, is now around 60% of all corporate volunteers. When companies offer more and more varied options, participation rises around twelvefold (Benevity).

## Why fixing this is worth it

Participation is not a vanity metric. It is where the value lives.

- Purpose-aligned companies report 25% higher revenue and 22% higher pre-tax profit (CECP 2025).
- A single day of volunteering cut turnover by half in a randomised study (Management Science, 2024).
- 40% of Gen Z and 51% of millennials have left a job for lack of purpose (Deloitte 2025).

A programme nobody joins delivers none of this. A programme most people join delivers all of it. The gap between the two is design.

> People did not decide against giving. They decided against your process, three screens in.

## How to fix the participation problem

Treat it as a design challenge, not a motivation one:

- **Make it impossible to miss.** Surface giving and volunteering in the tools people already use, and put the offer, including any match, in front of them at the moment of decision.
- **Strip out the friction.** One place to give, volunteer and see impact. Single sign-on. Pre-vetted charities. Under five minutes, no paper.
- **Offer real choice.** Payroll giving, one-off donations, micro-giving, virtual and skills-based volunteering, employee-nominated causes. Let people take part on their terms.
- **Show the impact.** People give again when they can see what their last gift did. Report it back, personally and company-wide.

Do those four things and the flat line starts to climb, not because you asked people to care more, but because you finally made it easy for them to.
